Foreword
Good day, everyone, and welcome to the Jakarta Geopolitical Forum VIII/2024. It’s a privilege to be here with you, and we are grateful for this opportunity to exchange insights.
Throughout the past century, discussions and research on maritime spaces predominantly revolved around traditional notions of sea power, geostrategy, and the norms and institutions governing the law of the sea. While these topics remain relevant today, the maritime domain has grown more complex and dynamic since the 2000s. This is driven by globalisation, economic growth, increasing interdependence among nations, competition for scarce resources, emerging threats, heightened concerns over climate change, and advances in maritime technology. The accessibility of the maritime commons is increasingly threatened by growing vulnerabilities and fragmentation. The geo-maritime commons is being reshaped and redefined due to geopolitical, environmental, legal, technological, and physical transformations.
As we gather here with a shared purpose—to exchange our geopolitical knowledge, experiences, and passion—let us seize this opportunity to make the most of our time together. I thank you for your presence and wish you all a fruitful and engaging experience.
